Sen Nelson Effiong Proposes Dead Penalty for Pirates in Nigeria


A bill on the Suppression and Punishment for Crime of Sea Piracy in Nigeria sponsored by Sen. Nelson Asuquo Effiong, representing Eket Senatorial District has passed second reading in the floor of the senate.

The Nigerian Senate commended Sen. Effiong for sponsoring the bill and promised its commitment to give the bill accelerated passage in order to protect commuters and those doing business in the Nigeria sea shores.

The Bill when passed into Law, will ameliorate the security problems faced by the people living in the coastal communities.

In an Interview with the Senator, the Insurance Premiums on ships has increased because of the high rate of piracy in recent times, which according to him, the Maritime Bureau has been trying on how to protect his waterways.

The lawmaker went on to explain that almost 80% of what we are using on daily basis are imported, stressing that Nigerian importers have been having issues importing goods due to act of Piracy.

The senator pointed out that he has proposed life imprisonment for the sea pirates and dead penalty if in case committing the act of piracy somebody dies.
