#AKHAat25: Quality of legislation in 6th Akwa Ibom Assembly has improved significantly – Former Deputy Speaker

Itoro BASSEY, Uyo|

A former Deputy Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Obonganwan Grace Edim-Inyang, says the quality of legislation made so far in the present Sixth Assembly of the state has improved considerably.

Obonganwan Edim-Inyang was the only woman in the then 48 member legislature and the first to be elected Deputy Speaker at the time the first Assembly was constituted in January, 1992. She deputised the late Hon. Jimmy Jimmy Ntuen, who was first Speaker, before that regime was sacked by the military in 1993.

In an interview with some members of the Assembly Press Corps who paid her a visit on Tuesday, preparatory to the 25th anniversary celebration of the House, Obonganwan Edim-Inyang said legislation which have been made by the Sixth Assembly covering areas such as in education, health, governance, youth development/empowerment, economic and revenue generation, environment, judiciary, security and social development are superb.

She said this may have been possible because members of the Sixth Assembly are quit good, as they have had time to observe their predecessors and listened to useful comments which have helped to shaped their activities and actions.

She said, “legislators (in the Sixth Assembly) today are quit good because they’ve watched others, they’ve had time to see what others did before them”.

Edim-Inyang also hailed the Speaker of the House, Onofiok Luke, saying that he is one of the best to have led the legislature in recent years.

Commending the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom for reducing the cost of forms for elective offices for women, the former Itu (Itu OMA, comprising Oku-Iboku, Mbiabo and Ayadehe) lawmaker wishes that a woman becomes Speaker in future, even as she wants more women to be elected into the legislature.

“My wishes are for greater achievements for the house of assembly. My wishes are for more women to come to the House.
My highest wish is for the next House to produce a female Speaker. God bless the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly. #MilestoneOfExcellence
