Akwa Ibom Moves to Protect Public Safety: Governor Umo Eno Bans Masquerade Activities on Streets

Akwa Ibom has taken a firm step to ensure peace and order across the state, especially as the festive season approaches. Governor “Umo Eno” has signed an Executive Order officially banning masquerade activities on streets and highways.

According to the governor, this decision became necessary following several reports of harassment, violence, and disruptions linked to recent masquerade outings. While acknowledging the importance of culture, he emphasized that no tradition should put the lives of citizens at risk.

“I fully respect our culture, but no cultural practice should endanger lives or disrupt public peace,” Governor Eno stated.

He made it clear that anyone who wishes to display masquerades must restrict such activities to village squares or designated cultural grounds not on major roads, not in residential areas, and not in public spaces where people move freely.

With thousands of visitors expected to enter the state for Christmas and end of year festivities, the governor stressed the need to maintain the calm and friendly environment Akwa Ibom is known for.

To ensure full compliance, he has directed all security agencies to enforce the ban across all 31 Local Government Areas.

Despite the restriction, the governor assured the public that his administration remains committed to promoting the state’s rich cultural heritage and boosting tourism but never at the expense of public safety or human dignity.

Akwa Ibom continues to show leadership by balancing culture with modern security needs, ensuring that both residents and visitors can enjoy the season in peace.
