Former youth International King Osanga scored a second half free kick to help FC Ifeanyi Ubah to a 1-0 victory over ten man Akwa United on match day 35 of the Nigeria Professional Football League in Nnewi on Sunday.
Akwa United were reduced to ten men in the 40th minute after Chigozie Chilekwu was controversially sent off for a second bookable offence.
Fresh from their AITEO Cup victories away from home in midweek, both teams went into the match with great determination but failed to create anything meaningful in front of goal as goal scoring chances were few and elusive to the two sides in the first half.
With play mostly concentrated in the midfield, both teams stood tall thwarting each other’s frantic offensive efforts in all the departments.
The major high point of the game was the controversial second yellow card that was brandished at Chigozie Chilekwu following a foul that was committed by Christopher Lolo, a case of mistaken identity.
Despite the numerical deficit, the Promise keepers held on to end the first half on even terms.
The turning point came two minutes after the restart when King Osanga struck a low shot from a free kick into the back of the net to score for the hosts.
With a goal down, Coach Abdu Maikaba’s men stepped up their game but efforts by Ubong Friday, Cyril Olisema, Musa Newman and Christopher Lolo fell short of troubling Bamba Drissa in goal for IfeanyiUbah’s as the Anambra Warriors laboured to a slim win.
With this result, Akwa United remain 3rd on the log with 54 points from 35 matches while FC IfeanyiUbah moved up to 5th on the table with 53 points from the same number of games.
The Promise keepers will next engage Lobi Stars of Makurdi this weekend at the Nest of Champions.
