Succour has come to the people of Ikono Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State as Governor Udom Emmanuel, in his unrelenting efforts in providing quality healthcare service, has moved to give the dilapidated General Hospital in the area, a facelift.

The General Hospital, situated at the local government headquarters at Ibiaku Ntok Okpo, was inaugurated in 1991 by the then governor of the state, Group Captain Idongesit Nkanga, and has been decaying over the years. Virtually all the wards and medical equipments in the hospital are outdated. The roofs had decayed and carved in, as the theatre has been vacated due to leakages.

Good health and physical well-being of the people are major indices that determine the healthy condition of a nation or state. A vibrant and healthy populace contributes maximally to the development processes of government, as human resource is a very essential part in the growth and expansion of all sectors.

Since assumption of office, Governor Udom Emmanuel has not relented in ensuring that all necessary facilities and programmes are put in place for the good health and survival of the people.

In his welcome remark during the flag-off of the renovation process, the Medical Superintendent of the General Hospital Ikono, Dr. Ernest Eshiet, thanked Governor Emmanuel for his keen interest in the health of the people of the state.

“I thank the state Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, for giving the approval for the renovation of the hospital in conjunction with the Pin Consult, a Health Management and Consultancy Services, headed by an indigene of Ikono, who has made himself available to work with the state government for the hospital to meet its standard.

The Executive Director of Pin Consult, Mr Unyime Udoh Umoh, noted that the hospital had been in desolation years back, becoming a burden to the people of the area, a hospital which was supposed to provide services and life to the people. “I thank Governor Udom Emmanuel for giving us a listening ear. The flag off of this exercise is particularly by his personal intervention.

“The entire roof of the building will be replaced, after which everything within the hospital will be renovated including the fences and the gates. In other words, there will be a brand new General hospital in Ikono before the end of this year.

“The process has begun. Between now and the end of October, everything about renovation, restoration, rehabilitation or rebuilding will be done. Once this renovation is done, we will approach the government to furnish the hospital with equipment. Ikono General Hospital is a beneficiary of the equipments allocated to 10 general hospitals of the state. Except this place is renovated, government will not release the equipment.”

According to Mr Umoh, the hospital will provide internet facilities to enable consultations with doctors across the globe to that there is quality healthcare service in the state. “We will have partners in Europe, Asia and America so that in cases where doctors and nurses don’t understand what to do to a patient, they can communicate with foreign experts over the internet to solve the problem.
