Akwa Ibom State Police Debunks Viral Kidnapping Reports in Oron, Labels Them “Fake News”

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has dismissed trending social media posts claiming that students and teachers were kidnapped in Oron, describing the reports as false, misleading, and capable of causing unnecessary panic across the state.

Several screenshots circulating online alleged that:

  • Four students were abducted at Mary Hanney Secondary School, Oron, and

  • Children and teachers were kidnapped and killed during an attack in Oron

However, the Police Command has clarified that no such incident occurred in any school within Oron or the entire state.

In official graphics released by the command, the reports were boldly stamped “FAKE NEWS”, signaling the public to disregard the misleading claims.

Police Warn Against Spreading False Information

The Command emphasized that the circulation of false alerts poses a serious threat to public peace and may trigger unnecessary fear among parents, students, and residents.

They reiterated that:

  • Schools in Oron remain safe

  • No kidnapping incident was recorded

  • Investigations are ongoing to track down individuals responsible for publishing the false information

Public Urged to Verify Information Before Sharing

The Police urged members of the public to rely on verified sources, especially the official channels of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, rather than unverified social media posts.

The Command assured the public of its continued commitment to maintaining safety and security across all communities in Akwa Ibom State.

Parents and guardians were also encouraged to remain calm and continue their normal school routines.
