The Uyo Local Government Council has inaugurated a 500KVA power substation and a compassionate housing unit, projects officials say will strengthen electricity supply, stimulate small-scale businesses, and expand social protection for vulnerable residents.
The facilities, commissioned on Monday, include a transformer and substation at Mbiabong Ikot Akpan in Etoi Clan and a newly completed ARISE Compassionate Home for a widow in Nsukara Offot.

Strategic Investment in Security and Enterprise
Council Chairman Dr. Uw the electrification project as a strategic investment in community security and enterprise development. He noted that improved electricity stability would enhance night-time visibility, reduce security risks, and create a more enabling environment for artisans, traders, and small businesses.
Officials emphasized that reliable power supply is critical to sustaining the informal economy, which supports a significant share of local employment. They added that the new substation is expected to reduce outages, encourage new investments, and lower operating costs for micro and small enterprises.
Compassionate Housing for Vulnerable Residents
In Nsukara Offot, the ARISE Compassionate Housing initiative delivered permanent shelter to a widow, providing what council authorities described as a pathway to restore dignity and long-term stability. The project forms part of broader social welfare efforts aimed at supporting low income and at risk citizens across the local government area.
Council Leader Hon. Ekemini Bassey, speaking on behalf of the legislative council, commended the chairman for prioritizing projects that directly respond to community needs. He said the compassionate home symbolizes renewed hope for vulnerable families, while the power substation represents a critical infrastructure upgrade capable of driving both security improvements and sustained economic growth.

Alignment With Statewide Development Goals
Observers noted that the initiatives align with the development philosophy of Governor Umo Eno, whose administration has emphasized grassroots infrastructure expansion, social protection, and community-based economic empowerment as key governance pillars.
They added that the electricity and housing interventions underscore a broader objective to ensure public policy delivers measurable benefits, translating governance into tangible improvements in security, welfare, and economic opportunity for residents of Uyo Local Government Area.
