Six Years of Blackout: Uyo Council Boss Delivers 500kVA Power Substation to Ikot Obio Mkpong Ikono Community

The Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Dr. Uwemedimo E. Udo, has once again demonstrated his commitment to grassroots development with the official handover of a new 500kVA electricity substation to Ikot Obio Mkpong Ikono Community, effectively bringing an end to the community’s six-year blackout.
The event, held on Friday , December 12, 2025 in the community, is part of the Chairman’s flagship Project Light Up Uyo initiative—an intervention designed to strengthen power infrastructure, revive economic activities, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.
Speaking during the handover, Dr. Udo said the project reflects his administration’s resolve to address critical needs across communities in Uyo. He noted that stable electricity is a catalyst for socio-economic development, adding that the Council is committed to ensuring that no community is left behind.
The Akwa Ibom State ALGON Chairman emphasised that the provision of the electricity substation was in response to the community’s longstanding power challenges and expressed optimism that the new facility would restore electricity, energise businesses and support security efforts within the area.
The Member representing Uyo State Constituency, Hon. Uwemedimo Asuquo who hails from the community expressed deep appreciation to the Chairman. He described the intervention as timely and life-changing, stressing that the renewed access to electricity would uplift homes, empower artisans, and create a more vibrant local economy.
Earlier in her welcome remarks, the Councillor representing Ikono I, Ward 10, Hon Idiongo Mbosowo expressed gratitude to the Chairman for the prompt intervention and assured that the community would continue to support the administration’s efforts.
This presentation adds to a growing list of infrastructural and welfare projects undertaken by the Udo-led administration as it continues to drive inclusive development across Uyo LGA.
Goodwill messages were received from the Political Leader of the area, Obong Eyakeno Udoma; Youth Leader, Comrade Kufre Asuquo, Chairman of Village Council, Mr Inyang Usen Asuquo, community women leader, Mrs Affiong Ibanga while the Village Head and Clan Head of Ikono Clan, Etebom Ikpe George Okon gave the vote of thanks.
Present at the event were the Council’s Vice Chairman, Hon Christiana Bassey Essien; Councillors led by the Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon. Ekemini Bassey; the Secretary of Council, Mr. Obioabasi Ubongabasi Udofia; as well as Supervisors and Special Advisers.
Others in attendance included the Director of Works, Arc. Emmanuel Ekoh; the Ward P.A. to the Governor, Mr. Ifiok George; the APC Ward Chairman, Mr. Edehekeudim Akpan; and the PDP Ward Chairman, Elder Anthony Charles, community leaders, youths and women groups.
