Momentum is building in Akwa Ibom State as preparations for international flight operations at the Victor Attah International Airport (VAIA) enter a decisive phase. On Monday, January 19, 2026, the Committee on the Actualisation of the Airport’s International Status carried out a comprehensive inspection of facilities, signaling confidence that the April target for international flights will be met.
Key Areas of Inspection
Thecommittee’s oversight covered critical infrastructure and operational components, including:
Access road and terminal building
Apron and taxiway readiness
Security perimeter fencing and IP intelligence cameras
Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility
Vegetation clearing around the airport
Transformer area and medium voltage power panel
Prince Enobong Uwah, Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Chairman of the Committee, expressed satisfaction with the pace of work. He emphasized that the progress achieved so far inspires confidence in meeting the April deadline for international operations.
Governor Umo Eno, who inaugurated the committee earlier this month, tasked members with identifying infrastructure gaps and ensuring timely interventions. Continuous oversight and periodic inspections will remain in place until every component is fully completed.
Contractors and Commitments
Contractors, including VKS and Premium Construction Company, were commended for their speed and quality of delivery. Engr. Oliver Ebong of VKS assured that the international terminal will be completed by the end of March, addressing areas that require urgent attention.
Also the push for international status follows a technical assessment visit by a Federal Government team led by the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN. This collaboration underscores the seriousness of the project and its national significance.
