Akwa Ibom women are set to gather in unity and reflection as the State prepares to commemorate the historic 1929 Women’s War, a landmark event that shaped women’s resistance, leadership and advocacy in the region.
The commemoration, organised by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, will take place on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at the Ikot Abasi Local Government Secretariat, starting from 12 noon.
With the theme “Unity for Excellence,” the event is designed to honour the courage, resilience and collective strength of the women whose actions in 1929 laid a strong foundation for social justice, community leadership and women’s participation in public life.
The Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Akwa Ibom State, Lady Helen Eno Obareki, will grace the occasion as the Special Guest of Honour, a move that further reflects the State’s continued commitment to promoting the dignity, welfare and empowerment of women.
Speaking ahead of the event, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hon. Mrs. Iniibe Silas Etukudo, described the 1929 Women’s War as a defining chapter in the history of women’s activism, noting that it remains a powerful reminder of what unity, courage and purposeful leadership can achieve.
She added that the commemoration will not only celebrate the legacy of the heroines of 1929 but also inspire present and future generations of women to strive for excellence, unity and active participation in community and national development.
Women groups, community leaders, youths and members of the public are encouraged to attend as Akwa Ibom State reflects on its rich history and renews its commitment to women-centred
development.
