Uyo, Akwa Ibom State Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to positioning Victor Attah International Airport (VAIA) as a regional aviation hub, following his inspection of the neo terminal building and review meeting with key stakeholders.
The inspection comes as part of preparations for the commencement of international flight operations, a major milestone in the aviation development blueprint of the state government. Governor Eno emphasized that his administration is working to ensure the airport meets all international standards required by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority.
Significant progress has been recorded, with critical components for international certification being installed. Although some equipment sourced internationally have experienced minor delays, the Governor assured that identified gaps are being addressed to fast-track completion and guarantee compliance with global aviation standards.
Existing facilities at VAIA, including the modern terminal building, Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility, and Ibom Air’s operational base, provide a strong foundation for international passenger and cargo services. Governor Eno commended project handlers for their efforts and urged them to intensify work to close outstanding gaps.
He also charged Ibom Air’s management, led by George Uriesi, to deploy their expertise in realizing the vision of establishing VAIA as a hub for regional connectivity. The Governor noted that the elevation of the airport to international status will enhance economic activities through increased airline operations, improved connectivity, and expanded access to global markets.
The commencement of international flights is expected to boost foreign exchange earnings, attract investors, and stimulate growth in tourism, hospitality, logistics, and transportation sectors. It will also facilitate trade by easing exports and strengthening Akwa Ibom’s position in regional and global markets.
Governor Eno highlighted the broader social impact, noting that improved air connectivity will support healthcare services by enabling easier movement of medical personnel and patients.
“My assessment is that work is in progress. To open an international airport, we need all of the details, and that is what we are doing now. The gaps that have been identified, we are closing them… generally, I can tell you we are on track,” Governor Eno said during the inspection.
With consistent investments and strategic actions, Akwa Ibom State is gradually positioning itself as a major gateway within Nigeria’s air transport network, with VAIA set to redefine the aviation landscape in the region.
