Kano, Nigeria March 27, 2026
The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has tendered his resignation, marking a dramatic turn in the state’s political landscape.
His spokesperson, Ibrahim Shuaibu, confirmed the development on Friday, noting that the resignation had been formally communicated to the appropriate, it is true. The deputy governor has resigned from his position,” Shuaibu said, without elaborating on the reasons behind the decision.
The move comes against the backdrop of mounting tensions between Gwarzo and the Kano State House of Assembly. Lawmakers had recently levelled allegations of misconduct against the deputy governor, raising questions about his handling of official responsibilities. The Assembly had also initiated proceedings that observers described as a precursor to possible disciplinary action.
Political analysts say the resignation underscores the growing turbulence within Kano’s executive arm, particularly following Governor Abba Yusuf’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The governor’s realignment has triggered sweeping changes in the state’s political and administrative structures, including the removal of the Head of Service, Abdullahi Musa, and the dismissal of Commissioner for Investment, Commerce and Industry, Shehu Wada Sagagi.
Observers believe the shake-up is part of a broader strategy by the Yusuf administration to consolidate power and streamline governance in line with its new political priorities.
With Gwarzo’s exit, constitutional processes will now be set in motion to appoint a new deputy governor, subject to approval by the Kano State House of Assembly. Analysts warn that the development could further reshape Kano’s political terrain as the state navigates shifting alliances ahead of future electoral contests.
Efforts to obtain further clarification from the Kano State Government were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
