Ndifreke Effiong Hopes For Akwa United’s Revival In Kano

Akwa United forward Ndifreke Effiong says he is confident the ‘Promise Keepers’ will bounce back from their disappointing lone goal loss at home to El-Kanemi Warriors in Uyo on Matchday 1 of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

Effiong, who joined from Abia Warriors before the start of this season, has been picked alongside record goalscorer, Mfon Udoh, to lead the line for the Uyo-based side.

The striker in a chat with npfl.ng ahead of their Matchday 3 game at Kano Pillars said the two-time AITEO Cup winners cannot afford to slip on Sunday.

“We cannot afford not to get a decent result against Kano Pillars. It will be a tough game, that’s certain. We will give out all. The loss against El-Kanemi in Uyo still hurts. As a team, we have to move on and face the next game”.

“Kano Pillars is a strong side. I have played against them severally when I was at Abia Warriors. Akwa United got a result here against them previously, so we can repeat that same feat on Sunday. This game is so crucial for us, considering the fact that we are playing an abridged version of the league this season. Every game is important at this moment,” he noted.

Asked how he has settled in at Akwa United since making the move, Effiong said he has always dreamt of featuring for the ‘Promise Keepers’ despite not having the opportunity in previous seasons.

“I have perfectly settled in at Akwa United. I love the club and was looking forward to join them last season, but that was not possible. I am happy the deal sailed through and I am here now. My dream is to help the team secure the league title and return to the continent,” he told npfl.ng.

Effiong scored eight times for Abia Warriors in the previous campaign, and he adds versatility to the Akwa United squad as he can play in defence and midfield. He played as a left-back for Nigeria’s U-23 team in 2016.
