Despite concerns regarding the management of two clubs in the Nigeria Professional Football League, Akwa Ibom State Government says it is committed to ensuring teams from the State competing in the top flight end the season on a high.
Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Sir Monday Uko gave the assurance during an interactive session with newsmen, Thursday. He maintained that equal attention will be paid to the teams by the State Government.
Uko, dismissed insinuations in some quarters on possible segregation of the sides, hinting that Government was aware of the dynamics, before deciding to keep both teams in the league. He pointed out that the sole aim of keeping both teams is to provide more opportunities for Akwa Ibom people and beyond.
“The State is giving the players the platform to excel. We are working hard to ensure the players are extremely happy. There is no difference between Dakkada and Akwa United. Both teams are sponsored by the State Government. The much reason we should work together in harmony, he noted”.
Uko also charged the teams to go for the NPFL title, which he said has eluded the State, having won the Federations Cup in 2015 and 2017.
“The State Governor is aware of what we have done. He has challenged us to bring home at least a trophy this season. We must also be in the continent. This is a huge challenge and we must do our best to achieve this. We will do our best to make the teams comfortable.
We are happy with the competition between Akwa United and Dakkafa FC”, he added.
