In line with directives of the Standard Organization of Nigeria which makes sure every product and service comply with the standards approved by the council, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly today supported “The bill for a law to establish Akwa Ibom State Safety Commission.
The bill sponsored by the Member representing Ibeno/Esit Eket State Constituency, Rt Hon Usoro Akpanusoh was read for the second time. According to the sponsor, the bill which seeks to formulate policies, encourage and promote capacity building of its staff and another appropriate individual from public and private organizations for the safety of lives and properties and other related Safety issues,
He said the bill will also let safety standard for all sectors involved and be responsible for the issuance or withdrawal of overall Safety regulations certificates at all levels as may be required.
Speaking further he stressed that the bill will conduct investigations, research, evaluations and make recommendations accordingly; and practitioners shall be a registered member of the Institute Of Safety Professionals Of Nigeria (ISPON).
The Ibeno/Esit Eket Lawmaker mentioned a situation where Bamboo trees are used for scaffolding and called on his colleagues to rise and support the bill for the safety of the people to avoid further damage in the state.

Speaking in support of the bill where The Member representing Ukanafun State Constituency, Hon (Dr.) Charity Ido; The representing Analysis State Constituency, Hon. Udeme Otung; The Member representing Ibesikpo Asutan State Constituency Rt. Hon. Aniekan Uko; The member representing Etinan State Constituency, Rt Hon Aniefiok Dennis; The member representing Uyo State Constituency, Hon Anietie Eka; The member representing Ikono State Constituency, Hon. Asuquo Udo.

The speaker referred the bill to the committee on works, Labour and Productivity urging them to report back to the house in one month.

Earlier, The member representing Ibesikpo Asutan drew the attention of the House to what he titled “Disastrous Impact of Floodwater evacuation from Uyo Metropolis and threats to lives and properties of the people of Obot Idim Community and need for urgent intervention”

Rt. Hon. Uko brought to the notice of the House the impact felt by the people of the area, urging the house to direct the House Committee on Works and Labour and Productivity and the Hon. Commissioner for Works to visit the spot to ascertain the level of damages done.
He also called on the State Government to direct the Ministry of Works as a matter of urgency to reconstruct and Chanel the water to be properly emptied, not on people’s houses and farmlands.
He finally urges the State Government to provide relief materials to the affected people of Obot Idim Community in Ibesikpo Asutan State Constituency

The motion for the matter was moved and seconded by Rt Hon. Nse Essien and Hon Charity Ido respectively.
The Speaker thereafter referred the matter to the committee on works for further legislative actions.

The House was adjourned till 10th September 2019.
