TEDx Licensee and TEDxCalabar Lead Organizer, Bryce Edem says: “TEDx is a journey through a world of extraordinary ideas, born of, and driven by, curiosity. Imagine a co-creation hub where extraordinary ideas from ordinary people connect to create a rich landscape for creative collision and world-changing solutions. Imagine a ‘Talk Station’ where people share ideas that can solve specific, identifiable problems, a platform that showcases sometimes unknown people who do remarkable things; people who create significant value, who do cutting-edge work across different causes – people who provide ingenious solutions to the most pressing challenges around us.

“TEDxCalabar meets these criteria and more. It is a space for atypical, disruptive conversation that engenders reflection and action; and a congenial place for people to connect and make meaningful contribution to the lives of others. The combination of a diverse group of speakers, high calibre artistic performers and a richly heterogeneous and broadly-inclusive audience will form a mix that is sure to trigger exciting new ideas and initiatives.”

He adds: “The goal of TEDxCalabar is to create an immersive environment where creatives, innovators, organizations, thought leaders and key enablers from vastly different fields can cross-fertilize. As a city, Calabar is renowned for its touristic richness, its unique history, its creative vibrancy. TEDxCalabar 2018 leverages this destination value to convene passionate, open-minded change-agents in an inspired atmosphere of authentic dialogue and extraordinary thinking.”

TED is an annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. TED has been described as ‘‘the new Harvard, an open source of world-class education.’’ It is the world’s most prestigious idea-generation organization. TED talks are multidisciplinary, broad in scope, and cover a wide range of subjects; its videos have recorded more than 2.3 billion global views.

Like TED, a TEDx is a live, localized and independently-organized TED event. It is part of a revolution in global education made possible by organizers who want to engage with their local communities.

About TED and TEDx

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design – three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. Today, the event has broadened, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

TEDx offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world.
